My husband and I live on a small farm with our teenage son. Both my husband and I have regular careers, but we love growing everything from vegetables to flowers, to herbs and trees. Several years ago we went to Hawaii and I fell in love with the beauty of the islands. I really wanted to pick up and move there, however, that wasn’t realistic. Instead, I told my husband if we can’t live in Hawaii, then I will make my back yard look like Hawaii. Over the years, we have grown many different kinds of flowers, experimenting with what works in our desert winters and hot summers. Some years we have amazing luck with flowers and other years, not as much. It is always fun to see what flowers are going to really rock it each season!
During the pandemic, I was home for a month and my flowers were doing exceptionally well. Things seemed to be getting worse and worse for everyone and I felt completely helpless. I didn’t know what I could do to help. I decided to start making flower arrangements and deliver them (along with toilet paper when I could snag it) to the senior center in Florence. The ladies were always excited to get the flowers and TP and were able to deliver them to shut ins and people who needed them. I love making flower arrangements, so it gave me a purpose and a hobby during a tough time.
A couple years later, I decided it would be fun to have a flower party. I invited several friends and family over and had The Arizona Flower Girl, our local florist, come out and show us how to create flower bouquets. We had so much fun making flowers and enjoying good eats! It was a really cool day. I posted about it on social media and I couldn’t believe how many people asked if I would have another party so that they could come.
This got me thinking (as did turning 50 last year), what do I really enjoy? What can I see myself spending the rest of my life doing? Besides retiring in Hawaii (which would be amazing), gardening, growing and creating flower arrangements is pure joy for me. I also get a kick out of making someone’s day. This is how I came up with the Flowers & Kindness Project. I get just as much out of making the flowers as the person who gets to do something nice by sending them and the person who receives them. It’s a win all the way around.
So keep your eye out for someone who might need some flowers. If you watch, you will be amazed at all the kindness in the world. You will also see that life can be hard. Flowers and a kind word are a great way to put a smile on someone’s face and give them a little hope that everything is okay, one flower at a time.
Faith, Hope & Love, but the greatest of these is Love. Pass it on.
